an evening to remember

last night, the vee and her roommate carsten had a bit of a get-together at their abode, where the plan was for all to eat lasagna, pesto pasta, vee's ball-rocking bread, and salad, washing it all down with cheap beer and cupcakes. invitees included the significants (tall shawn and me), my sister (con cupcakes) and her friend rebecca, the cool-old-swiss couple, nala and giga, dieter (who made the kick-ass pesto with his "magic-stick" mixer), axel (sans carrie), and bob (who reminds giga of his weird uncle). it was to be an oh-so-wonderful evening...

but then a cat got hit by a car directly in front of the house. nala saw it as he and giga were walking up the street and he made a loud noise of disgust. the vee and i came running to see the injured cat. i held the kitten as it blew blood bubbles from its nose and its eyes rolled from side-to-side, unable to focus, and blood was coming from its ear as well. its jaw was broken and it couldn't swallow and could hardly breathe. this poor thing was a horrific sight, but it had no visible injury besides the trauma to its head. i held the cat and tried to feel around on the its side for any signs of internal injuries.

the cat got spooked when we tried to pick it up to take it to get it out of the street and lurched out of my hands and began running in circles until it tired itself out and crawled under a parked car. the sight of the traumatized cat running in circles was too much for the vee and she began crying.

i should point out that the cat looked very much like "tiger", the cat that vee and carsten had been feeding for the last two years, and that, at this time, we were under the assumption that this was that same cat. it wasn't. carsten knocked on the door of the house in front of which the car the cat was under was parked to see if the person to whom the car belonged was inside. (wow, what a convoluted sentence of prepositions!) it was her car and she came out to move it and saw the cat and freaked right out; it was also her cat. we wrapped the cat in one of vee's bath towels, then carsten and shawn drove the girl and her cat to the veterinary hospital.

that was how the night began.

about two hours and many cheap beers and cigarettes later, bob and the cool-old-swiss couple left without eating to watch the osu football game. and, not too much later, carsten and shawn returned with the bad news that the cat was unlikely to survive because the girl couldn't afford to pay the frickin' vet hospital any money up front! assholes!

sure, the rest of the night went fine for us: good food, more cheap beers, cigarettes and cupcakes. it was overall a very nice evening, cool but not cold, with an almost full moon and candlelight; beautiful, really.

and we tried very hard to not think about the cat and whether it would live.
