i'm a donor (not that kind)
yesterday, i did it. i called in to a public radio station and donated money. first time for everything.
i have long been a public radio listener, preferring to hear the even tones of news announcers and truly alternative musical choices ranging from bluegrass to worldbeat than the clatter of moronic pop and the too often offensive ditterings of commercial deejays. the crap that occupies the upper frequencies of the fm dial is astoundingly boring and demoralizing. i am glad that there is public radio to fill our ears and minds with more than mtv-packaged bullshit and other panderings.
so, somewhere between "morning edition" and "all things considered", i called in to pledge my ninety dollars and fifty cents - "less than 25¢ a day!" they said. and it's about time, i guess, 'cuz i've gotten more than 25¢ a day's worth in the 5 years i've lived in this cowtown.
i don't tell all this to brag, nor to guilt anybody out there into paying for great shows like "car talk", "this american life" and the above-mentioned news shows, or the only truly alternative musical programming in this whole damned town. no, i only speak as one man who gratefully is putting his wallet where his ears are.
I usually give to public broadcasting. Along with student radio, and Lupus, MD, and MS charities. And Children's Hospital, without whom, I would be a little more ugly.
